The aim of the Ocean Friendly Business project is to achieve harmony between commercial progress and the preservation of our peninsula’s coastal ecosystem – by respecting and preserving our unique environment.

Overseen by Nicoya Waterkeeper, a water pollution prevention organization, the project guides local businesses in sustainable, ocean-friendly practices via environmental training, tools, and resources. Ocean Friendly Businesses, therefore, commit to cease using and selling single-use plastics, to recycle and compost the waste they generate, and to properly treat their wastewater.

We have installed an eco-friendly Bionest system to treat our wastewater. An entirely natural solution, the system will see our wastewater discharged into an on-site drainage or drip irrigation system while offering superior treatment (resulting in clear and odorless wastewater), a modular configuration (the biomass of the system grows as demand on it increases), a reliable resistance to organic and hydraulic shocks, low maintenance costs, and long-lasting components, thereby ensuring the system itself will never need replacing.

We’re also aiming to implement a solar energy system (via HiPower) to ensure the energy we rely on is independently generated off-grid, in a thoroughly environmentally-friendly and sustainable way.

Installing such an energy system should guarantee our energy supply is entirely reliable and our energy consumption thoroughly efficient, while reducing our electricity costs and, of course, significantly reducing our CO2 emissions.
